Truth Or Consequences

Don’t Run From the Truth There was an old game show called “Truth or Consequences.” The premise was simple: contestants were asked a question and had a few seconds to give the correct answer. If they could not answer correctly, they had to face the consequences. Although the television program later became associated with Bob Barker, who began hosting it in 1956, the title itself provides a powerful illustration for life: when truth is ignored, consequences eventually follow.

But we are not talking about my truth or your truth. We are talking about the Truth of God's Word. Jesus said in St. John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Truth is not determined by our feelings, opinions, culture, or personal interpretation. God's Word is the standard.

The problem is that sometimes what is true does not agree with what we want to believe. Proverbs 14:12 warns us, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” What seems right is not necessarily what is right. Isaiah 55:8–9 reminds us that God's thoughts and ways are higher than ours. Therefore, when my understanding disagrees with God's Word, God's Word must have the final say.

Proverbs 1:24–33 gives a sobering picture of what happens when wisdom is repeatedly rejected. Wisdom calls, but people refuse to listen. God stretches out His hand, but they refuse to respond. Eventually, they experience the consequences of what they refused to hear.

This does not mean every hardship is punishment for personal sin. But Scripture makes one principle unmistakable: choices have consequences. Galatians 6:7 says, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

Sometimes God's truth corrects us because He is trying to protect us from consequences we cannot yet see.

So don't run from truth.

Don't be embarrassed by truth.

Don't apologize for truth.

Don't dilute truth.

And don't make excuses for refusing to live by truth.

Jesus said, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). The truth may confront you before it comforts you, but its purpose is ultimately freedom.

The real question is not merely “Truth or Consequences?”

The question is:

“Will I receive the truth before I have to experience the consequences of rejecting it?”

Elect Lady's Corner reminds us: Truth is not our enemy. Truth is God's mercy revealing what is real. Don't wait for consequences to teach you what God's Word is trying to tell you today. Stand for truth. Live by truth. Walk in truth. And when truth corrects you, don't run from it. Let it change you.
