Biblical Wisdom In Plain English

The Rock: Book 2 Part 2

As we pick up in Chapter 2 of II Peter, we find previously, Peter had mentioned the prophets of the Old Testament who were holy men of God that spoke on God’s behalf, but even among them there were still false prophets. So, we find in all dispensations as God sends forth true Prophets, the devil will send some to seduce and deceive by bringing about damnable heresies through false teachers and false prophets. They won’t do it openly before the true men and women of God, but they do it secretly giving their destructive doctrine that dishonors the God that once delivered them.

And when they do this, they bring upon themselves a swift and terrible end. Sadly, Peter said many will follow these false teachings; and because of this false doctrine, the truth of Christ will become in disrepute. These same false teachers will exploit many by false truths that they make up, to get many to give them money. But, as sure as they have deceived many, their judgment will not continue to linger because their destruction is at hand.

If God did not spare the angels that sinned and cast them down to hell (these were the angels that left their first estate to be with human women); and neither did He spare those who did not repent at the preaching of Noah, nor did He spare the wicked people of Sodom and Gomorrah in their gross sins, neither will these false teachers be spared from God’s judgment. Remember, if God knows how to judge the ungodly, even as they as they await their day of judgment to be punished, then He certainly knows how to reward and deliver the Godly from trials and temptations.

Peter then gave a description of the characteristics and behavior of seducers and false teachers. You will know them because they walk after the flesh i.e., they walk after their sinful nature, and they despise authority. They are proud and arrogant and have no fear of speaking against God ordained leaders. But yet the angels that are more stronger and powerful than they are, do not speak any disrespect towards God’s Chosen.

These false teachers and slanderers are like brute beasts, creatures of instinct, and like beasts they will perish as they speak blasphemy of what they do not understand. They will reap destruction for the evil they have sown and as they boldly display their evil deeds in the broad daylight. They are a disgrace and a shame among you, but yet they feast with you. They commit adultery with their eyes, and their lusts is never satisfied.

They seduce weak unstable souls into sin that produces cursed children. Their primary example to whom they followed was the prophet Balaam; who forsook the righteous path of God in exchange for the wages of sin. But he was rebuked by his donkey for his covetousness who turned him from the death angel. People like Balaam are useless as wells without water or clouds blown away by the wind that are reserved for utter destruction.

They promise deceived people much with boasting and lying vanities, but they deliver nothing. The devastation of this deception is that those who were once delivered from the corruption of this world by the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; who allow themselves to become entangled again and return to the worldly system will become worse off in the end than they were in the beginning. Apostle Peter said it would have been better for them to have never known the ways of righteousness, than after they have known it, make their own decision to turn away from what God gave them as His holy commandments.

Wow! That’s heavy! Peter compares them to the proverb that says they are like the dog that returns to eats his own vomit or a washed pig that returns to the mud.  You’re returning to what made you sick and returning to the filth you were once cleansed from by your own choice. It has been said: “The state of apostacy is worse than a state of ignorance.” Let’s stop here and pick up next week at the ELC as we discuss our last chapter in the book of 2 Peter concerning the Last Days.
