Biblical Wisdom In Plain English
The Edge Of Night
There was an old television soap opera called The Edge of Night that aired from 1956 to 1984. Unlike traditional soap operas that focused primarily on romance and relationships, this program revolved around crime, mystery, suspense, and courtroom drama. Viewers tuned in daily, wondering what would happen next as characters navigated danger, uncertainty, and deception. In many ways, that title describes the spiritual condition of our world today.
We are living in an hour filled with uncertainty, confusion, moral decline, and increasing darkness. Yet perhaps the greater concern is that much of the Church is no longer standing firmly on the unshakable truth of God's Word but is instead their living on the edge; balancing between truth and compromise, conviction and convenience, holiness and cultural acceptance. The Church was never called to live on the edge of truth, but it was called to stand firmly upon it.
Today, many believers allow themselves to be pulled in competing directions. Society demands conformity. Culture pressures compromise. Convenience often replaces commitment. Entertainment substitutes for discipleship (especially in songs and music, etc.) Feelings are elevated above faith, and opinions are often valued more than Scripture. The result is a generation attempting to follow Christ while simultaneously seeking the approval of the world. Jesus warned us about this dilemma when He said: "No man can serve two masters..." (Matthew 6:24)
A believer cannot successfully stand with one foot in God's Kingdom and the other in the world's system. Eventually, the tension becomes unbearable, and a choice must be made. The edge is a dangerous place to live. A person standing on the edge of a cliff is only one step away from disaster. Likewise, a church standing on the edge of compromise is only one compromise away from losing its spiritual influence and effectiveness. There is a gradual drift into darkness. Few people wake up one morning and decide to abandon their faith.
Spiritual decline usually happens gradually. It begins with neglected prayer. Then inconsistent Bible reading. Then weakened convictions. Then tolerated compromise. Then diminished passion for God. Before long, what once seemed unthinkable becomes acceptable. The Bible warns us repeatedly about drifting away. Hebrews 2:1 said: "Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip." Remember, drifting requires no effort; but remaining anchored requires intentionality.
Ships drift because they are disconnected from their anchor, and Christians drift when they disconnect from Christ. So, how do we go from the edge to the foundation? The answer to this instability is not better marketing, bigger crowds, or cultural adaptation but the answer is to return to the solid foundation of God's Word. Jesus declared in Matthews 7:24: "Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock."
Although storms came, winds blew, floods rose, yet the house stood because it was built on a foundation that could not be shaken. Today, our world is experiencing storms of every kind such as economic uncertainty, family breakdown, moral confusion, political division, and spiritual deception. But the Church's security will never be found in trends, traditions, or personalities. But it must be found solely in Christ, and we must rightly divide the Word of Truth. Paul instructed Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:15: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
Notice that Paul did not tell Timothy to merely read the Word but He said to also study it. The Church does not just need scriptures; but it needs someone to “rightly divide the word of truth” according to sanctification and not to justify weaker lifestyles. We are living in a generation overflowing with information but starving for revelation. Many know popular opinions about God, yet few know what God has really said. When God's Word is neglected, deception flourishes. When God's Word is honored, discernment increases. When God's Word is obeyed, transformation follows.
The Church must return to being a people of the Book. The good news is that no matter how dark the night becomes, God's light shines brighter. Darkness has never defeated light. One single candle can illuminate a dark room. One believer on fire for God can influence an entire family. One praying church can impact a city. One surrendered life can become a beacon of hope to countless others. Jesus declared: "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid."
The Church was never called to blend into the darkness. It was called to expose darkness with the light of Christ. But perhaps one of the greatest questions facing the Church today is, will the Church remain apathetic and continue to live on the edge of compromise, or will it respond to this dilemma and stand on the foundation of Christ? Will we follow culture, or will we follow Scripture? Will we seek comfort, or will we pursue conviction? Now is not the time to drift. Now is not the time to compromise. Now is not the time to live on the edge.
It is time to stand firmly upon the Rock of Ages, anchor ourselves in God's eternal Word, and shine brightly in an increasingly dark world. For while the world may be approaching the edge of night, God's people are called to walk in His glorious Light. Romans 13:12 said: "The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light." The darkness may be growing deeper, but the day is dawning. So, stand firm, stay faithful, hold fast to the truth, and let your light shine because the King is coming!
