Are You Purpose Driven Or Purpose Forgotten?

Audio Version

In 2002, there was a book written called Purpose Driven Life by Pastor Rick Warren. Pastor Warren said this about purpose: “The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfillment, your peace of mind, or even your happiness. It’s far greater than your family, your career, or even your wildest dreams or ambitions. If you want to know why you were placed on this planet you must begin with God.”

What a true statement about people who are purpose driven! Good examples of purpose driven people who stayed in their purpose and were not driven by self-aggrandizement would be Ruth. Ruth was driven by her purpose to serve Naomi wholeheartedly, once she came into the truth of the Hebrew God whom Naomi had taught her to love. She totally abandoned her pagan environment and her family who served the Moabite god Chemosh.

Although Naomi was discouraged, bitter, and in despair, Ruth continued to follow her, support her and obey her to the point of marrying a relative of Naomi’s that was much older than Ruth. She not only gleaned the fields for Naomi while Naomi remained home depressed but gave her her only son that she later bore to Naomi to be her son. She never left her purpose once she found it and had no desire to pursue her personal goals to make a name for herself.

But God in turn made a name for her, by permitting her to be of one of the only 2 females with their names written as books of the Bible. But more important, her lineage not only included the greatest king of Israel, King David but also the earthly lineage of the King of Kings, Jesus Christ. Another example would be the 3 Hebrew boys. They knew who they were and Who their God was! Not only did these boys not defile themselves with the King’s food (including no marijuana); they refused to bow down to king Nebuchadnezzar’s idol that he erected.

They were purpose driven because God said: “Thou shalt not have no other gods before Me. thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them…” (Exodus 20:3 and 5a) They were willing to be thrown into a fiery furnace before they would walk away from their purpose.  However, Jesus rescued them from this fiery furnace!

Also, when Queen Esther had the possibility of being executed by going to the king when she was not given permission to come before him; for the sake of all her Jewish brothers and sisters being annihilated; she went before the king although unrequested by him and she said: “…if I perish, I perish.” (Esther 4:16

The greatest example is when our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ having to face the horrors of the cross, the separation of the Father, and carry the burdens of all mankind sins, He went to the Father and said: “O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me: nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt.” (Matthew 26:39b)

Jesus was purpose driven and never lost sight of His purpose to the point of death! But, on the other hand, there were some that were purpose forgotten! Samson who was born to be a deliverer to Israel against the Philistines, left his purpose to go after Philistine women. Samson later used his strength against the Philistines for personal gain, instead of the purpose to use it solely for the kingdom of God. He was purpose forgotten!

Also, Jesus healed 10 lepers, that had desperately called out to Him for their healing, but 9 of them were purpose forgotten after they got what they wanted and never returned to Jesus. Then, there was Gehazi, the servant of Elijah who was also purpose forgotten, when he decided to take on the rewards that his master Elijah turned down because he felt this was due him; but later lived a life of leprosy because of his self-ambition.

Lastly, there was Satan who was created as a beautiful and anointed arch angel, full of wisdom, the epitome of music in its fullness, yet he wanted to usurp authority and take over the throne of God because he was purpose forgotten.  So, at the end of the day you need to ask yourself: Am I Purpose Driven Or Purpose Forgotten? Or is your dilemma according to Galatians 5:7 which said: Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?
